Founded in 2015, Suatukala is a community initiative based in Langkawi aimed at encouraging creativity & a thriving artistic eco-system in Langkawi by promoting the art of story-telling in all forms. The association’s base communities consist of school children and young arts practitioners residing in Langkawi, Kedah. It aims to encourage self-expression, critical thinking and the development of artistic talent among this community.
Suatukala directly involves Arts practitioners based in Kuala Lumpur to share their knowledge and create new works with our community as they stay on the island as part of their residency program and/or workshops organised by us. The resulting products of these residencies/workshops are then showcased to a larger audience in Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur through a final on-ground activity or in collaboration with other communities. To date we have reached over 1,000 students, youth and arts lovers through our various programmes.
‘Pulau Sri’ Storytelling
Pulau Sri is an original multi-disciplinary performance combining spoken word, theatre and music to present a contemporary interpretation of the famous Mahsuri legend. Developed, produced and performed by an all-female ensemble, Pulau Sri is inspired by the Mek Mulung; an 18th century Kedahan theatrical art form. Directed by spoken word poet Sheena Baharudin and musician Takahara Suiko, Suatukala’s ensemble will comprise women from both Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur in an immersive outdoor performance that aims to tell the ancient story of Mahsuri in a new way, thus keeping her legend alive and relevant for current and future generations.
